2000 Xia Guan Toucha

An old classic Xia Guan toucha

I’m a big fan of the older production of Xia Guan (pre-2004), especially those that have not seen any humid/wet storage conditions. The reason is these older XGs project a very beautiful aroma, an orange citrus and wood spice combination that I simply adore. This signature note becomes more captivating when the tea is allowed to develop and bloom under natural conditions. After the first rinse the pleasingly rich and vibrant character of the tea is in full display. Sipping the brew I pick up the citrus/woody note alongside a light caramel sweetness at the fore, interspersed with almonds, pine resin, a touch of leather and other age nuances. This is a powerful tea that requires striking the right balance for each steep to ensure sufficient heat and time for optimal extraction whilst holding in check that kick of astringency and bitterness.
This old classic toucha possesses strength and potency aplenty, a promising sign for much more to come. The 2000 XG is a different beast compared to the modern style (drink now) of XG today that prioritizes being approachable and presenting an easy aromatic and mellow brew.

Additional Note: Famous big factories like Menghai TF, Xia Guan TF and Kunming TF from the old era (Pre-2004) are highly sought after. Noteably the old traditional style of puerh production from this time period laid the foundation for many of the famed puerh vintages of today. Consequently these old productions from the aforementioned factories have also greatly risen in price and brought about countless fakes and imitations.
